Compare BTU/h and minimum flow first. Then use your tub, climate, insulation and plumbing to decide which chiller is actually the best fit.
How we compare chillers
We prioritize published BTU/h, flow requirement, electrical input, installation environment, connection size and source confidence. We do not convert affiliate commission into editorial ranking.

Best by use case — after sizing
Small insulated indoor builds
Lower-BTU equipment can work when volume and heat gain are genuinely modest. Do not assume an aquarium-style 1/4 HP chiller will hold a 40°F target in every uninsulated tub.
Flow-constrained DIY plumbing
A chiller with a lower minimum-flow gate can be easier to integrate than one demanding 800+ GPH, even if headline HP looks similar.
Outdoor systems
Use an outdoor-rated chiller. Do not solve weather exposure with a larger indoor-only model.
Run the final choice through the calculator
The table is a data comparison, not the final recommendation. Enter your tub, target, environment, pump, filter and hose to see which supported unit clears both thermal and hydraulic gates.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best cold plunge chiller?
There is no universal winner. The best-fit unit is the smallest supported chiller that still passes your conservative thermal and hydraulic requirements.
Is Penguin better than Active Aqua for cold plunges?
They have different published capacity, minimum-flow and environment characteristics. The right choice depends on the exact system.
What size chiller is best for 100 gallons?
100 gallons alone is not enough. Insulation, ambient, target, sun and desired cooldown time materially change the answer.
