Match the tub and chiller from water volume, insulation, climate, port size and real operating flow. The correct chiller is the one that holds target temperature with margin and still receives its required GPH.
Start with the tub, then size the cooling system
Record usable water volume rather than the marketing outside dimensions. Next note whether the tub is thin-wall, inflatable, foam insulated or a premium rotomolded design. Insulation changes both initial cooldown and the power needed to hold temperature between sessions.
Ports matter too. A chiller-ready 3/4-inch or 1-inch connection is much easier to design around than a small drain fitting that requires adapters and introduces restriction.

What the chiller must clear
- Pull-down: cool the starting water to target in the time you can accept.
- Hold: stay ahead of ambient and solar heat at the target temperature.
- Flow: receive its minimum GPH after the full loop.
- Environment: be approved for the place it is installed.
An insulated 77-gallon tub and an uninsulated 100-gallon stock tank can demand very different equipment even if the water volumes look close.
Buy the system, not the headline specification
Before checkout, confirm the chiller’s published BTU/h and min-flow requirement, the pump curve, the filter restriction, hose diameter and the exact fittings needed at the tub. The cheapest component-by-component basket can become expensive if adapters, a second pump or a larger chiller are needed later.
