A durable, inexpensive DIY vessel with a known 100-gallon nominal capacity and official dimensions. It is an excellent reference for a high-heat-gain DIY build because it should be modeled as uninsulated unless you add an enclosure or foam.

What the tub means for cooling load
Without added insulation and a fitted lid, the tub exchanges more heat with the surroundings than a foam-filled cold-plunge vessel. That increases holding load and makes low-temperature chiller sizing more conservative, especially outdoors or in warm rooms.
ChillSizer uses actual gallons and an insulation category/range rather than assuming every vessel with the same outside size behaves the same. A fitted lid can be as important as the wall construction because the top surface is continuously exposed.
What the ports mean for plumbing
The stock drain is not automatically an optimized chiller loop. DIY builders should plan secure bulkheads/adapters, support the external plumbing and avoid reducing the whole circuit to a small drain fitting.
Factory chiller ports are convenient, but the entire loop should not automatically be reduced to the smallest fitting. Hose length, valves, filter media and the chiller’s own restriction all contribute to the pump operating point.
Weight, location and serviceability
The water alone weighs roughly 834 lb at the nominal 100-gallon fill, before the 32.4-lb tank and user. Confirm floor/base capacity and safe drainage. The tank itself is light when empty but not portable when operating.
Plan drainage and equipment service before filling. A vessel that is easy to move empty can become effectively permanent when full.
How to pair it with a chiller
Enter the published or measured water volume, insulation, environment, target temperature and exposure in the System Designer. Then select the filter and plumbing. The best-fit chiller is the smallest supported unit that passes the conservative thermal and hydraulic gates with useful margin.
What this page does not claim
This is a specification-based system guide, not a hands-on durability review. Comfort, long-term seam/finish quality and service experience require evidence beyond a product specification sheet. Where a manufacturer does not publish an engineering input, ChillSizer leaves it uncertain rather than inventing precision.
Frequently asked questions
Is Rubbermaid BRUTE 100-Gallon Stock Tank chiller-ready?
Not as a purpose-built cold-plunge system. It can be adapted, but the plumbing and insulation are a DIY engineering task rather than a factory integrated feature.
What chiller size should I use?
Use the exact gallons, insulation, climate and target temperature. Do not pick from the tub name alone.
Can it be used outside?
The stock tank is a farm/garden vessel, but the cold-plunge system around it — chiller, pump, filter, electrical connections and insulation — must be designed for the actual environment.
