Specification-based guide

Ice Barrel 300

A system-focused look at the vessel: usable water, insulation, ports, loaded weight and how those choices affect chiller and pump sizing.

77 gal (292 L)Fully insulated; manufacturer states thick polyurethane foam in barrel and lid3/4 in NPT chiller ports
Quick answer

A compact, documented insulated vessel with known 77-gallon volume and factory chiller ports. It is a stronger engineering starting point than an unknown-volume uninsulated tub, but the chiller still must be sized for climate and target temperature.

What the tub means for cooling load

The documented foam insulation and lid reduce the heat-gain uncertainty compared with a thin-wall stock tank. In a hot climate, insulation can materially reduce holding load and chiller runtime, but direct sun and ambient temperature still belong in the model.

ChillSizer uses actual gallons and an insulation category/range rather than assuming every vessel with the same outside size behaves the same. A fitted lid can be as important as the wall construction because the top surface is continuously exposed.

What the ports mean for plumbing

The manufacturer publishes 3/4-inch NPT chiller ports. That is useful for a clean connection, but a high-flow system may still benefit from keeping the rest of the loop as large and unrestricted as the equipment allows.

Factory chiller ports are convenient, but the entire loop should not automatically be reduced to the smallest fitting. Hose length, valves, filter media and the chiller’s own restriction all contribute to the pump operating point.

Weight, location and serviceability

The published full weight is around 700 lb before adding dynamic movement. Confirm floor/balcony capacity, drainage and access. The 35.5-inch footprint is compact, but the loaded condition is the structural case that matters.

Plan drainage and equipment service before filling. A vessel that is easy to move empty can become effectively permanent when full.

How to pair it with a chiller

Enter the published or measured water volume, insulation, environment, target temperature and exposure in the System Designer. Then select the filter and plumbing. The best-fit chiller is the smallest supported unit that passes the conservative thermal and hydraulic gates with useful margin.

What this page does not claim

This is a specification-based system guide, not a hands-on durability review. Comfort, long-term seam/finish quality and service experience require evidence beyond a product specification sheet. Where a manufacturer does not publish an engineering input, ChillSizer leaves it uncertain rather than inventing precision.

Frequently asked questions

Is Ice Barrel 300 chiller-ready?

Yes. Ice Barrel publishes built-in chiller ports and describes the tub as usable with ice or a chiller.

What chiller size should I use?

Use the exact gallons, insulation, climate and target temperature. Do not pick from the tub name alone.

Can it be used outside?

The manufacturer markets all-weather/UV-resistant durability and recommends using the cover; the chiller itself must separately be rated for the installation environment.
